Summer Reading Lift Off!

All ages

Come to the park to celebrate the start of Summer Reading! There will be a Drone Demonstration, Kites in the Park, Bounce House, Rocket Launching hosted by Boy Scouts, Star Wars Characters, and more!  Here you can sign up for the summer reading program, pick up a calendar and reading log, and check out all there is to offer at the library this summer!

Paws for Books

School Age

Do you have a reluctant reader who needs more practice and inspiration to read aloud? Sign up to read to a therapy dog! Coco is a therapy dog who is certified through the Nationally Accredited Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Inc. This means that Coco has been screened for skills and temperament, health and cleanliness, good manners and attitude. If a child suffers from severe allergies or asthma, Paws for Books might not be appropriate or enjoyable.  Only parents or guardians will be able to sign up their children.

VolunTeen Orientation

Entering 6th grade and beyond

Are you interested in volunteering in the library this summer? We are looking for Teens to help with storytime prep and events in the library, write book and media reviews, create cool posts for our social media accounts, decorate and maintain the teen space in the library, and help create projects and tasks to make the library yours! You’ll build job and communication skills, earn volunteer hours, meet new people, serve as a community role model and earn volunteer hours that look great on college applications! Teens will volunteer for 1-2, two hour shifts per week and attend weekly meetings in June and July.

Lunch Bunch - Read Aloud Book Club

3 - 8th grade

This 8 week book club will take us through one middle grade novel. Kids going into 3-8th grade will meet once a week and a section of the book will be read aloud to the group at each session.  Kids will bring their own lunch to eat while they listen to the book. Each participant will get a copy of the book to follow along if they wish. Registration is limited and will open May 1 at the library and online.

Tori’s Precious Pets

All ages

With a great variety of children-friendly animals, Tori will present an exciting and educational program regarding her animals’ habitats, care, eating habits and much more.  Attendees at this program will have the opportunity to interact with these animals and feed them as well.

Bison and Tipi Building with the Children's Museum

Ages 6+

Exploring Dakota Culture and Art:  The tipi and buffalo are important parts of Dakota culture and tradition. Guided by two Educators from the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota, children and adults will learn more about how a tipi is constructed as they assemble the tabletop kit and discover how different parts of the buffalo are used by Dakota people with a demonstration of items included in a buffalo box.

Drop-in Reading Marathon

How much can we read today? Drop into the library between 10 a.m . -5 p.m., sign in, and then read for 30 minutes in the library to win a reading medal (while supplies last).

Space Exploration Building Lab with the Children's Museum

What does it take to explore space?  Check out this building lab focusing on space exploration with two educators from the Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota.

Launches and Light STEM Program

Ages 7+

This STEM program taught by Peter Johnson, a science teacher will challenge kids ages 7 and up.  Launch your rocket into orbit! Use clay, paper fins and a straw to make a rocket. Adjust the angle, power and mass of the straw launcher to launch it perfectly!  This program also explores different types of lights using demonstrations and hands-on stations. Space is limited.

The Reptile and Amphibian Discovery Zoo will visit the library with lots of animals to explore! Come for this fun, engaging and interactive presentation while gaining a greater understanding of these fascinating creatures!

Musical Storytime with the Shaskans

Elementary Age

Author/Illustrator Team Stephen Shaskan and Trisha Speed Shaskan will each read one or two of their books, Trisha Shaskan has a new book coming out July 2019 that she is excited to share with us.  Stephen will play guitar and sing songs, and will draw on the whiteboard in this interactive storytime.

Battle of the Books

Teen Battle: Ages 13-18

Tween Battle Ages 9-13

Test your book knowledge against other youth in the region at THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS!  Teams consist of 4 people. Gather a team together or sign up individually and be placed on a team. Sign-up early, spots will fill up fast!  This year’s TEEN titles are: Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson, Jackaby by William Ritter, The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner and Warcross by Marie Lu  This year’s TWEEN Titles are: Rain Reign, By Ann Martin, The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, Wild Robot by Peter Brown and Wishtree by Katherine Applegate

Zoom! From the Earth to the Edge of the Universe

All Ages
Travel space this summer at the Saint Peter Gym by stepping into the Bell Museum’s ExploreaDome. The Dome is a traveling planetarium with live programs inside. Journey through the Solar System, galaxy and universe, and explore the vast distances of space. * It is recommended that you bring towels, blankets or mats as you will be laying on the gym floor. A limited amount of space is available for those requiring chairs. The tent is ADA accessible. This event is free, but space is limited.  Max. per program is 28 people, 112 spaces total.
Thu., Aug. 8, program times at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and runs approximately 40 minutes. SPCC Gym, Free
